How do you upgrade your laptops hard drive?
June 62010
Hello. I’m looking to upgrade my laptops standard hard drive with something that has more space and is faster. Specifically, this: Seagate Momentus XT (500GB). But how do I make sure that everything on my current hard drive is transferred over. And what about my OS (Windows 7)? What are the steps exactly? Do I need a professional? Thanks.
Surendren has made a good detail! However, there’s one other free program that can clone an old drive to a new drive regardless of the size or capacity as long as the existing files on the old drive will fit on the new drive. The program’s name is Easeus Partition Master:

It’s does the same function. However, this program can also resize your partitions if you have more than one. You can also create extra partitions out of one partition and you don’t need to backup your data to do so. It’s all done on the fly but it is always a good habit of making backups on an external media like a DVD or flash drive.
The EZ Gig software costs $39 which comes with an external 2.5" hard disk enclosure (drive not included). I you already have a hard disk enlosure lying around or you can borrow one without the drive you don’t need to buy any software. Just use the free Partition Master program that I have mentioned.
