Why are desktops better than laptops at gaming?

March 92010

Posted in desktops | 6 Comments »

i can see why up-to-date desktops are better but my Gateway desktop from like the 90’s runs games better than my laptop i got around april of last year. the gateway is using Windows Professional 2000 and the laptop uses vista.

im not exactly sure what the specs on the gateway are but they can’t be better than the laptop can they?

first of all it depends on the games you’re running, BUT

when compared to laptops, desktops normally have faster processors, more ram, and faster hard drives (up until recently laptop hard drives were limited to 5400rpm where as desktop HDDs have been 7200 rpm or greater for a long time.) On top of that, only the best graphics cards can fit into desktops. hence why desktops run games better than laptops.

the size limitation and heat dissipation problems in laptops prevent them from running the fastest processors and having superior ram amounts. as time goes on, laptops will get closer to desktops, but they will never surpass desktops’ ability to run games.

Are desktops noisy these days and do they produce a lot of heat?

February 232010

Posted in desktops | 2 Comments »

I’m trying to decide between a laptop and a desktop. Do desktops make a lot of buzzing noises when it’s on, or are the new designs have softer sounds like laptops? Also do you produce a lot of heat? Sometimes if you leave a desktop on too long it can get soo hot!!!

Most premade desktops can be loud, even "gaming ones" cause of the fan.
This can EASILY be fixed by buying a better QUIET fan.
They make fans that move MORE air than cheap fans and have less noise.

Leaving the comptuer on does not make heat, making the computer do work makes heat.
Always keep the computer in an area with space around it, I keep mine out in the MIDDLE of my bedroom… it looks awsome like that.

Laptops do not get too loud cause generally they got terrible GFX cards and have way lower speed CPUs so they run much cooler thus do not need as big of a fan.

Any efficient way to utilize the Internet connection for two Desktops other than using router?

As of now, we are using the Broadband internet Connection for only one PC. What would be the case if two ppl wanna use with two different desktops simultaneously. As i am aware about the network devices like Hub, Switch & Router, So it would be better if you give any other alternative solution which should be cost reductive and efficient. Moreover i am using Static IP Address. Thanks in Advance for your assistance.

Hooking up a wireless laptop. Two desktops are connected to the internet by a box. I tried to install the disc?

that came with the wireless box I just bought and it won’t connect. Both of the desktop computers in the office work fine, but I would like my laptop to be able to work wireless while at work also. Please try and explain to me how I can get this working?

Not enough info…
Are you even able to view wireless networks?
When you installed the disc for the wireless router, were you in port #1?
The disc that came with it is NO GOOD! do a manual setup. Put the default gateway ip address into a browser on one of the desktops. Login to your router, and setup the wireless security that way. If you run into any problems, press the reset button on the back of the router (you will need a paper clip).

Can I connect 2 desktop computers to a wireless modem and get internet on both desktops plus my laptop?

I just bought a laptop and a wireless router (it has an integrated wireless card inside of it). The router has a 4 port thingy on the back (sorry for the lack of technical terms here, lol). My roommate and I each have a desktop and both need to be hooked up to the internet from the desktops. Can we hook them up thru the wireless router? How do we do it and do we need any other additional equipment? We have one cable modem as well, where does that come into play?. Also do I need to "activate" the wireless function at all or is it just there already? I’m new to this if you can’t tell. :) Thanks!!
Thanks everyone- we aren’t planning on getting wireless cards for the desktops, we’ll just use cables.

Hi,

You have the perfect setup for wireless network connectivity, so let’s walk through this step by step.

1. If the router is in fact a wireless router, and not merely a switch, then any computer (desktop or laptop) that has a wireless network card can connect to the internet through that router. Of course , you can also hook up to 4 computers via the ethernet ports in the back of the computers to the router (that’s why it has 4 ports—yes, you used the right terms!) Also, you will need a modem, but the modem must match the connection you are using. If you connect by DSL, then you must use a DSL modem. If you connect by cable, then we will need your cable modem. If the house you live in is aready wired, then you will only need the wireless router. Also, each computer must have a network card, either wireless or wired.

So, here we go:

A: DSL
1. The modem and the router shoukld have some with instruct.ions and a CD. Follow those instructions EXACTLY—it ususally involves installing all the software before you even turn the router and the modem on.

2. Once you’ve followed all the instructiosn and turned on all the equipment, Connect the modem to the phone jack with your phone cord (Instead of connecting it to the phone)

2. Plug an ethernet cable from the modem to the router (these ports on the back of both the modem and the router will say "internet").

3. Plug any computers that will not be wireless into the router. They are now connected to the internet. For wireless computers, the wireless function will onny need to be "activated" if there is a wireless button on your laptop—it will look something like this: (( I )) . It you don’t see this button, the wireless is always "on".

4. Are you running Windows XP service Pack 2? If not, it will be difficult to set up the wireless connection. If you are, click on Start, Control Panel, then Network Connections. Look to the left, and you’ll see the words "View Wireless Connections". Click there.

5. This will bring up a new box, listing the names of wireless networks that you can connect your computer to. Look for the name of your network there (usually the name of your router). Click on it and click Connect. It will try to connect. If it asks for a network key, type in the key you were given when you were following the instructions to set up the router and modem.

6. Connect all your other computers the same way. A cable connection will work the same way, only you won’t use the phone cord, you’ll use the cable cord.

That’s alot to read (and type, believe me!) If you need further assistance, please just e-mail me.

Hope this is helpful!

I just got a job fixing desktops and laptops and i want to buy the best tools and newest everything please throw in your opinion on what you think some good tools are

Visit a local computer store or electronics website and buy one of those big tool kits. I have personally bought a kit from NewEgg made by Roswell and it has helped me repair and maintain many systems in my home or for friends. Ask your coworkers what they recommend.

Is there a way to get completely separated desktops on MAC?

February 52010

Posted in desktops | 2 Comments »

What i am looking for and asking myself is, if there is anyway i can get lets say 2 desktops or more which are completely separated from each other? with this i mean, that to siwtch to the other desktop you need a password, and for example have 2 Msn’s on at the same time, 2 skypes etc etc.I’m new to MAC so i really dont know, if anyone could help.
thanks.

There is a way to do what you want (virtualization) but using Spaces inside MacOS will only give you separate screens, you won’t be able to run multiple instances of Skype and MSN as different users (simultaneously).

Virtualization can be done with something like Virtualbox (free). It’ll let you run a separate instance of an operating system, completely separate from the host OS you’re running it under (in this case MacOS).

The catch is Apple won’t let you virtualize MacOS so you’d need to run Windows or Linux under Virtualbox. It may be possible to run MacOS under Virtualbox but it’s not allowed by Apple and won’t be easy. Either way, virtulization is not trivial… it’ll be a learning curve for the average computer user.
