I am going to buy a laptop and was wondering what degree of freedom I get with upgrading parts inside it (such as RAM, hard drive, graphics card, CPU, etc). A list of things that are changeable and a level of difficulty (one to ten?) to change it would be helpful. If it helps I will probably be getting a Lenovo G550 – 29584PM, but I would prefer an answer that gives a general look on laptops because I could easily change my mind on the exact one. Thanks a lot.

RAM is usually pretty easy in most laptops

Hard drives are usually pretty easy to change as well

CPUs require quite a bit of work, but can be changed in most full-sized laptops

Graphics cards are not upgradeable 98% of the time

Hope this helps

This is a Gateway Laptop, model MA7. It has a 15.4″ LCD display and comes with Windows Vista Home Premium pre installed with the recovery disks included. This computer has an Intel duo core processor running at 2.0 GHZ, 1 GB of RAM, and a 160 GB western digital HDD (about 149 GB useable). This has a CD/DVD burner, but does not burn dual layer DVD’s. The graphics are integrated and use 128 MB of hyper memory which is shared with the system.

As far as ports, you have a mic and headphone jack in front, 4 USB ports, a firewire port, an RJ11 and RJ45 connection, A VGA and SVideo out, a ( I believe) 5 in 1 media reader, and the expansion slot.

The problem with this computer is that the DC power port does not work. A friend of mine tried to fix it, and in his words “botched it pretty good”. He said his soldering was sloppy and the new port doesn’t work. I’m not sure if he damaged the motherboard when he tried to fix it or not. It could be fixable with another $5 dc power port and someone who knows how to solder, or he might have ruined it. I didn’t look at the motherboard myself, so I can’t tell you.

If you can get the DC power port fixed, this will be a great laptop. I included the AC/DC converter, and I can tell you that that at least works.

I will wipe and reinstall Vista Home Premium before shipping. The included battery is a model 3UR18650F-2-QC-MA1. When fully charged this only lasts about 30 minutes. I will charge it before I ship it out to give you the opportunity to test the hardware and leave feedback.

I hope you can get this laptop fixed, otherwise there are some great components you can take from this. The case is in good shape, just a small piece of plastic is broken off that would separate the faces of the USB ports.

Happy bidding! If you have any questions, please email me through the eBay listing!

For another $25, I will preinstall MS Office 2003 onto the HDD (Including Word, Excel, Outlook, Powerpoint, Project and InfoPath). For an additional $5 I will install Miscrosoft Frontpage, One Note, Visio, Publisher, or Access. For $40 I will install all these programs. Just let me know in the notes you send with your payment.

I will not be able to include restore disks for Office products.
