There should be a sticker with your windows key on your tower’s case if you do then you most likely have an image of windows on your hard drive most company’s do this… Look for the set up doing post,

It would have something like repair or restore to factory settings…

I’m think at least an I3core processor and 2GB RAM, but would prefer 4GB. They are still running Office 2002.

What’s ridiculous about it?

Are the machines doing their jobs or not?

Some companies make the economic decision to save their money rather than upgrading every time something new comes out, so long as what they have is adequately doing the job.

At this point, you have the additional burden of not only spending money on new equipment, but wasting time and money while the people learn all the new stuff that’s different. If you upgrade all their equipment, be prepared to answer a TON of questions to do stuff that simply doesn’t work the same way anymore. The company might not consider this to be a valuable use of your time.

I’m not saying NOT to upgrade — obviously, if you NEED to install some new software for some new functionality, it’s very likely it won’t run on the old stuff. And obviously if all you need to do is upgrade the RAM (assuming you can find any that’s still compatible), then that’s a very inexpensive way to make the systems run better without forcing people to make any uncomfortable changes.

BUT, if you don’t NEED to install some new stuff, you MIGHT be better off just staying with the old stuff. Don’t stir up the hornet’s nest if it isn’t necessary.

It depends on the brand and model.
Generally, IBM and HP generally offer three-month standard warranties on their refurbished notebooks, while refurbished Dell Inspirons come with a one-year limited warranty.

I don’t know what to do. I don’t want to have to call anybody over unless I HAVE to. Can you please give me a step-by-step instruction guide to install Windows XP Professional on a REFURBISHED PC.

There’s a lot of details you haven’t said. Did this computer originally come with Windows XP, and you’re trying to restore it to factory original condition? If so, do you have a restore disc for it? Then insert the restore disc, reboot the computer, and follow the instructions from the program on the disc. If it came with XP but you don’t have a restore disc for it, then call the manufacturer to find out how to obtain it or other backup of the original software.

If it didn’t come with XP, or no backup software is available, then do you have a legal copy of Windows XP to install on it? Have you checked the specifications of the computer to be sure it is compatible with Windows XP? (You don’t mention how old it is, so this could be a problem.) If you have a copy of Windows XP for it, then insert the disc in the disc drive, reboot, and follow the instructions for the install program. … if you don’t understand the instructions, or if the computer won’t boot from the CD/DVD drive, then I would suggest either calling someone to help you, or purchasing a copy of "Windows XP for Dummies" or another basic computer how-to book, to learn.

If you don’t have a copy of Windows XP for it, and the manufacturer doesn’t have backup software available, then you’re kind of stuck; Microsoft isn’t selling XP anymore. You’ll have to either stay with what’s on the computer, or purchase a currently available operating system, like Windows Vista (assuming that it’s compatible with your computer).

Refurbished pcs in my opinion are pretty close to new. usually what it means is that there was something wrong and it was returned to the manufacturer or licensed location and restored to its original glory.

If it should break down i would go to a local repair shop not like fry’s electronics, with me being a IT man my self I don’t usually go to pc shops but big corporations like fry’s tend to over price repairs.

Here is a good shop in Austin Texas. http://www.startechpc.com/ little shops like this care about the customer and take good care of your pc.

Just changing out a CPU probably won’t make any difference. A CPU will long outlast a computer’s useful life unless it gets burnt out by overclocking, so replacing one will make no difference in how long it will last. Some of the electronics on the Space Shuttles still use Intel 8086 CPUs that were manufactured in the late 1970s.

yes – as long as you purchase manufacturer refurbished pcs which come with warranties – I have bought from the following sellers who are reputable

no problems – pcs and laptops were all "as new" – returns accepted no problem. I haven’t used EuroPC so I can’t speak for them – just avoid computerbargains – rip off merchants
