Generally they work good as new, though a warranty is always recommended.
PCs get sent back because one part is bad, but the rest of them are usually fine. You’re still getting the same hardware with a refurbished machine, it’s just been used a little bit. Computers live so long that you won’t notice a difference.

Usually the newer laptop will probably have the faster CPU whether it be Intel or AMD, BUT the make or break hardware between the two would be the graphics card. Desktops are bigger so you have space to play with them more where the laptops have to try and squeeze every single square inch of the space it has.

Example:
Desktops have multiple RAM slots, up to 4+
Laptops however usually only has 2 slots.

Desktops have more fans and space to place video/graphics cards.
Laptops usually have integrated cards or the higher end ones are prone to overheating because lack of air circulation.

A laptop isn’t really meant to be better than desktops.
You buy laptops for PORTABILITY, not high end performance that desktops offer.

The 2 main things that make a computer faster for gaming are the processor and the video card. While laptops can have pretty fast processors they almost all rely on onboard video as the videocard. Obviously u cant stuff a gigantic highend ATI Radeon 4890 or 5870 or a GeForce 275 or 285 in a little bitty laptop. Heck the cards alone weigh about the same as a laptop. Plus the overheating issue would be a concern even if u scaled down the size of a videocard. Hope this helps.
