Debian Gnome + Beryl “3D-Desktop”
April 172010
Debian GNU/Linux with Gnome Desktop running Beryl/AIGLX for 3D desktop effects. Debian version was “etch” (”testing” at that time).
System:
AMD64 3500+, 1024 DDR2-400, Geforce 6600GT
(but it runs on very old machines, try it out)
You can get all themes, styles, icons etc. on gnome-look dot org. The dockbar at the top is part of “gDesklets” (available on official repositories).
On gnome-look dot org, search for…
“dragon” (wallpaper)
“glassy” (icon set)
“dark” (color theme, I don’t remeber the exact name)
You can install everything with the default gnome theme manager.
There are a lot of users posting “this is ubuntu” – it’s not! The menu icon was part of the default ubuntu icon set I installed before (the new “glassy” icon set does not replace the menu button).

So, …
@germanize83
So, If you don’t use these effects, why do you admire it? “artistry for artistry”?
Such complicated desktops don’t add new things for communication between human and maschines and it could be very frustrated.

@poxtra102
I use computer at work for earn money (there is linux) and my home computer (winXP) as private office. Play? I prefer play with my girlfriend in other games.
Such complicated desktops are good for humbug people, who like gloryfy dead things.
The gteatest advantage of system linux is its simplicity – such desktops kill this clever idea.

hum, I …
@artilekt
hum, I am thinking of ooo, evolution ekiga and many others… but if you use your pc only for bashing, that’s your choice. On another hands, this kind of “enhancement” allows us to answer windows users: Hey, we don’t, but we can have a pretty desktop. Linux is not difficult to learn, and is as powerfull as windows… This is not just for bash-loving-nerds!

nice, tough I’m not …
nice, tough I’m not such a big fan of compiz effects because they bring instability (at least to my system they do). Linux is and allways be better than windows, because not only that the OS itself is free but most applications are and those that aren’t have really low license prices. And let’s face it these days linux it’s only a little bit harder than windows because it evolved so much in the past 10 years, and debian really rocks at the stability chapter.

I’ve been running Linux for about 4 years now. After numerous distros I have to say that debian is the best I’ve one that I have ever used. I find it much more stable than Ubuntu.

I’m just saying that linux is not primarily made for that things. Only thing that i would like to see on ubuntu is Windows 7’s touch screen, but i don’t say i would use it.

Well if you mean …
Well if you mean almost all games are for Windows, than yeah, you’re right. but a lot of other apps are cross platform. I use gaming for Windows and have a Linux partition for everything else =]
The only reason games suck for Linux is because they aren’t native to it though. if they made them native for Linux and they ran on OpenGL 2.* it would be a pretty cool gaming platform too. There is a rumor that steam is porting their stuff to Linux, but it’s only a rumor… Would be cool nevertheless.

to hororian comment …
to hororian comment: this crap is integrated in operating system, same as windows aero, dont talk shit.
about wine – with lots of games (mostly dx10) there are many problems, some games wont run anyway. I am passionate COD4 player, but in wine multiplayer does NOT work. wine is freakíng good. if you look what can linux programers do without official drivers, emulating DX, insane. I apricciate their work so much, but still, everything (mostly) is made for Windows.

This is wasting of valuable system resources! Linux is not made for this crap.

I’m guessing that if I told you I just started using Linux this year and I’ve only used Mandriva and Ubuntu, you’ll give me a lecture on why I should man up and use Slackware.
