Desktops haven’t really lost their power advantage, it’s just that it’s less noticeable in day to day use.

Desktops are upgradeable and have a wider range of peripherals, most laptops have limited upgradability. Desktops also have powerful graphics cards which are more suitable for gaming than laptops, even those that have separate graphics.

Desktops are also less stealable than laptops and have less overheating problems, so some corporates are likely to stick to them for a while.

There is also a trend for computers in which the current latest, most powerful hardware cannot ever currently fit into a laptop. Once the miniaturization is cracked, it moves to laptops.

But perhaps the most important reason that desktops won’t be made obsolete by laptops is that they will probably both be made obsolete by a combinations of pervasive web access, virtual computing and improved access devices.

I would totally disagree with your there. Desktop are reaching the speed of super computers. The end is no where near. Not even durning our life time. They are still developing new and exciting hardware. Exsample: Computers that will no longer run on hard drives. The OS will been install via ram or flash memory. That will be awsome! Laptop still have along way to go. Reason – 99.9% of them are not upgradeable. The general public will no go for that. Why buy a laptop that will be absolete in 2 or 4 years? and it not just the software, or a whole computer that become absolete. 90% of the time it’s only one part and most of the time, it’s the video card.

Desktops to some extent will be around for a long time. Especially desktops that are designed to be media centers. Companies will continue to find ways to integrate desktops into your life in some way, so the traditional desktop everyone is familiar with may not always be around, but it will be in some way

Forever. Laptops are about four time the price to get equivalent power. The saying goes "half the power at double the price"

Until they can build a laptop with the coolant and graphics of desktops, I'd say a fair bit yet.

I would think only 10 more years max because the chinese have already built a pen laptop that uses a built in projector to display windows on any surface. Now all we are waiting for is for nano and micro technology to develop further so we can even have quad cores in notebooks, which are due soon
