Oh by the way for all you folks looking for FREE virtualization…go download Citrix Xen right now…it’s totally free and unlike VMWare it will install on IDE drives so you can play with it at home. VMware offers a free version but it’s not the full blown thing AND it will only run on scsi disks.

thinstall is goofy. Why load a whole dekstop for just app. With Citrix I get all this plus just apps if I want them so where you gotta “spend” 512 MB or Ram for just one app I can get by with like 60 or 70 MB…whatever the footprint of the app is. Oh yeah what about one to many disks…you gotta use emc or netapp or some hugely expensive san vendor. Citrix comes with provisioning server so I don’h have to waste disk space per vm and I can stream to physical boxes too.

    Supposedly, you can …
Supposedly, you can use other connection methods alongside RDP; you can use VNC or other things, as well as the Wyse accelerator and the HP’s Remote Graphics Client (unfortunately, HP’s solution, while great, is like $800 a seat..)

We’re implementing VMware VDI at a school system starting with 150 seats and RDP is a problem for some of the flash-based learning sites they use. We’ll have to use the local browser on the thin clients to use some of those apps until RDP improves.

    I agree, RDP is …
I agree, RDP is really the downside of VMware’ solution, along with some lacking features. I would also say that the prize of the solution reflect this. Microsoft recently announced they intend to acquire Calista Technology to improve the user experience over RDP — improvements I guess also would benefit VMware in future releases. Interesting space to watch as Citrix have been optimizing their ICA with SpeedScreen technology for ages and also leaked information regarding “Project Apollo”.

I love how all the …
I love how all the UI stuff is so slow to respond that it you can even see the forms redraw in this youtube video! Now that your developers have basically embedded their web content into the actual VI client application I expect that we will see more of the same in the future — experience RDP-like performance in native apps too, only from VMware!
