I have a new job in IT and the client PC’s are all refurbished with only 512MB of RAM, is this ridiculous?

I’m think at least an I3core processor and 2GB RAM, but would prefer 4GB. They are still running Office 2002.
What’s ridiculous about it?
Are the machines doing their jobs or not?
Some companies make the economic decision to save their money rather than upgrading every time something new comes out, so long as what they have is adequately doing the job.
At this point, you have the additional burden of not only spending money on new equipment, but wasting time and money while the people learn all the new stuff that’s different. If you upgrade all their equipment, be prepared to answer a TON of questions to do stuff that simply doesn’t work the same way anymore. The company might not consider this to be a valuable use of your time.
I’m not saying NOT to upgrade — obviously, if you NEED to install some new software for some new functionality, it’s very likely it won’t run on the old stuff. And obviously if all you need to do is upgrade the RAM (assuming you can find any that’s still compatible), then that’s a very inexpensive way to make the systems run better without forcing people to make any uncomfortable changes.
BUT, if you don’t NEED to install some new stuff, you MIGHT be better off just staying with the old stuff. Don’t stir up the hornet’s nest if it isn’t necessary.
