I’m building a pc right now, piece by piece. I have a smaller budget than you. And I’m having to fix my old computer at the same time. Both my burners died. I have my mobo and memory and video card. I’m getting a case and 450 watt ps this month. My new burner will cost me 42 bucks along with a $12.00 dvdrom. The case and powersupply about 60 bucks. All will be bought at DIT. Ditcorp must be having trouble with their server and I would suggest going to the site sometime tuesday.

Easy answers…Asus or MSI motherboard, that takes a 775 cpu. Then get a nice dual core cpu from Intel, the D-805 is a $50.00 one that runs at 2.46ghz and is highly overclockable if that is what you want. Also get a GOOD cpu fan, I like the Zalman ones but they can be a pain to install. Get a 256 meg video card, brand isn’t important, cost and that it works in your board is. Go for 2 gig of memory because 1 gig can be too little especially if you choose Vista as the OS. Personally I would go for XP Pro, it is a proven item and Vista has ‘issues’ with some non standard setups. You will need a hard drive, get one about 250 gig for the c: drive andthen add more space in secondary drives if you need it. Most boards now come with SATA connectors so go that route. Check http://www.slickdeals.net for any deals. Don’t forget the case, it will need at least a 400 watt power supply, more if you want multiple cd drives ,etc. A 400 watt one will supply 3 hard drives and 2 cd drives, but just barely, think 500 watts if you are thinking along those lines. Case is unimportant as to brand, just pick one you like that is in your price range. They can be a ton or very cheap. I like to get them with the power supply already in them, but if the power supply is too small, I buy them seperate. Remember ‘parts is parts’ you can make almost anything work as long as you pay attention to the details.
