Does anyone know about refurbished computers?

February 52010

I’m in the market for a new computer, and when I go to well known stores online they offer many refurbished pc’s. Would anyone consider one? What about the not so well known brands, are they just as good as the rest? Please advise, boxing week sales are almost over!!!
how about a Horizon computer from MDG?

"Refurbished" usually means something was wrong with it before, and it was sent back to the manufacture, fixed, and is now being sold at a reduced price. Make sure you’re getting a full warranty on your product if you do decide to buy one, as sometimes something wasn’t quite fixed, or may break again. However, they are generally in good shape, and will save you some money.

The not-so-well-known brands are usually not that much worse than the others. However, because they are smaller companies, they may not offer the same level of tech support as the "main" companies, and will not even have as many users you can ask, either. But because most computers are the same overall, you can just ask on general tech boards (or here).

When buying one, ask the store’s return policy on computer systems. If they have one, give it a week, and see how you like it. Check to see if it runs your programs, doesn’t crash or freeze up right of the box, and so on. In the end, the choice is up to you.

    Alrighty lets see…

Refurbished computers means there was a problem during shipment, handling or during manufacturing and was altered.

This may have been sent back to manufacturer or repaired at retail location (dependant on the specifics and nature of problem)

Just because something is new doesn’t mean its good. I am sure we all had something straight out the box that was a piece of crap…computers are no exception.

I like saving money. Sometimes refurbished computers will have an extended warranty over top of manufactures to sweeten the deal. And of course, lower price.

If you shop around you may find as I have that most really are not that much cheaper. Also you may find one particular brand that has more refurbished than others. This I would avoid like the plague as that means some engineer is not doing his homework.

What is important is that the computer you want has what you need to do. It could be used for business, gaming or watching DVD’s. Just make sure it has your specific requirements.

Most branded computers have severe limitations on expansions. Such as… Can I update?

    Video
    Sound
    Add a hard Drive
    Add more memory
Add a PCI expansion card? (how many empty slots)
Can it handle Vista (latest Windows operating system)

All extremely important when purchasing a PC. But if bottom line is the only reason for looking at refurbished I say go for it, just cover you butt just in case.

Hope this helps and have fun :)

Refurbished computers normally are a computer that was sent back because of a hardware issue. The factory or company will fix whatever the problem was and resell the computers. I would definitely consider one mainly because it is practically a brand new computer for cheaper. As for which brands it depends on which ones offer what you are looking for but there are some brands I would stay away from. Gateway, Acer, Compaq (HP is still fine even though they are merged, and eMachines. These computers are all built with the cheapest part the companies can find. Most other companies will cost a little more but the product you are buying is more reliable.

I have always tried to buy refurbished electronics and computers and have been doing it for the last 20 years or so. They have never let me down and the savings are excellent!

Think of a "refurb" this way: You are buying a computer that has any bugs in it, fixed BEFORE you buy it NOT after. And you will save a ton of dough to boot.

    Enjoy your new ‘bot.

Refurbished can mean that executives were issued, or leased, laptops, or desktops, and they are sent back through the testing process, wiped out, re-installed and offered at a fair price!

Some are from bankruptcies, or recalls, or off lease…

All are warranteed! I like http://cheaptronicsdepot.com which is a mile from my house, and they are honest! DELL is their thing!
Prices are fair, warranty is up to 1 year!

I repair Macs under warranty, and there are ‘refurbs’ offered with new warranties, at http://apple.com that mostly are DISPLAY models, or NIB stock left over in the warehouse…

    They go FAST!!!

I have bought two new computers in my computer lifetime of 41 years (started Computer Maintenance in the Air Force in 1965, for 20 years!). Now, I always build my own or get refurbs… The OSes I run, make the hardware run upto 50X faster than Microsoft, and have NO virus’!!! ALL spam and virus/
‘ are the "114,000 felonMicrosoft Virus Definitions", so, I run Mac/*BSD, and GNU/Linux in some of the available 811 OSes!

All come with thousands of FREE games, apps. & suites…
